Enjoy sport and be more child-like in your sport environment as well. All these children are present, having fun and loving what they’re doing. And that’s what I want to be when I’m on the world stage.

We invited British Athletics to join us for an inclusive sports day.
Pupils at Bettridge School in Cheltenham met Olympic and Paralympic athletes Piers Copeland, Mickey Bushell MBE and Harrison Walsh.
The school is dedicated to supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities. Offering opportunities for children aged 2 to 19, it provides a supportive, positive and educational environment to enable learners to achieve and make progress against their personal outcomes.
Families are also encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education and future life goals. Inclusive sport is a large part of the curriculum, giving the children a space to develop their social skills, balance, coordination, and confidence.
Watch how the children got on below.
The children threw themselves into a range of inclusive activities with the athletes, got their advice on technique and tried on their medals from the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“The children love sport, but to have special guests like Irwin Mitchell and British Athletics made today have a real buzz about it. It’s just been phenomenal, and it’s really raised the profile of inclusive sport,” says Jo Bleasdale, headteacher.
They also asked their burning questions, prompting Piers Copland to reveal his favourite Disney character’s Eeyore, because he likes to sleep.

I think it’s incredibly important to have days like this because it gets everybody involved. It shows people that they can do stuff and there’s a way around doing stuff. The way they’re tailoring these activities to different disabilities is amazing.”
