Matthew’s story
We supported Matthew and his family to buy and adapt a home to meet his needs.
Our experts supported Hayley and Nicola after their son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy following a brain injury at birth
Matthew has athetoid cerebral palsy, which affects all four of his limbs. As a result, he can’t move or sit unaided and needs 24-hour care. He communicates using an eye-gaze sensor.
Matthew lives in an adapted home with his mums and his two brothers, James and Joshua. They also have a live-in carer.
Working closely with Matthew’s occupational therapist and care team, we helped the family find and purchase a suitable property that could be adapted to Matthew’s needs. We appointed Wyvern Partnerships to act as property administrator to plan the adaptations and develop the property.
The family have called their new home ‘The Ability Maison’, where they promote Matthew’s independence through the adaptations, which include:
- Widened doorways
- Automated doors, lights and blinds
- A lift from the ground floor to Matthew’s bedroom
- A hydrotherapy swimming pool.
The property is now a wonderful family home with Matthew at the centre of all the changes. It’s had an incredible impact on quality of life for the whole family.

We wanted to achieve a home when we came here. We didn’t want somebody to walk through the door and it screams disability. The equipment is vital. But we wanted it to feel homely rather than clinical.

Katie’s Story
We helped build a purpose-built home for Katie and her parents.
Katie suffered a lack of oxygen at birth, which resulted in cognitive impairment, tetraplegia cerebral palsy and profound development delay. She also suffers from epilepsy and is registered blind. She depends on others for all aspects of daily living.
Our experts supported Katie’s parents Andrew and Rosa to claim compensation to help with Katie’s care. Their home at the time was a small three-bedroom semi-detached house but the two-storey layout meant Andrew and Rosa had to carry Katie upstairs to bed each evening.
The support structure of GPs and hospital care for Katie limited the radius of the search for a new property and the size and nature of Katie’s equipment had to be considered as well.
It became clear during the search that it would be more effective to build a property specifically for Katie’s needs. Damian and his team supported the family from making the planning applications and bringing in the right people to seeing the project through to completion.
‘The Bungalow’ features adaptations that allow the family to be together, including:
- Extra-wide doorways
- Ceiling hoists
- Open kitchen-diner and living room
- Integrated garage to make transfers to the car safe and comfortable
- Outdoor space for family walks
- A spare bedroom for Katie’s carers
- Storage for all Katie’s equipment.

Our home has really helped and enhanced all our lives. Katie enjoys living in the property.
